Following the vote in the House of Commons last night during the Brexit debate, Ken Clarke’s vote against the Government has resulted in the Party whip being withdrawn from him. He is, therefore, no longer a Conservative MP and naturally I am saddened to lose Ken as a Conservative colleague.
Following the referendum three years ago, with vociferous views from both sides, it is regrettable that the debate has culminated in the current events in Parliament. We now need to deliver Brexit and the change people voted for across the country.
On behalf of the Rushcliffe community I would like to thank him his devotion to public service as our Member of Parliament over what is approaching the last 50 years. His track record is enviable and unparalleled. Serving not just the constituency but also the country in numerous Offices of State under several Prime Ministers.
Ken has held many Offices of State, including not just Transport, Education, Health, Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary but also two of the highest posts, Home Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer. His remarkable career has culminated in the status of Father of the House, recognising his long and distinguished commitment to public service.
All future correspondence should be sent direct to his office at the House of Commons rather than to the Rushcliffe Conservative Association office.
